New research suggests that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using such treatments must be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting usually experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
