Roughly 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.

Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a statement.

Law enforcement say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.

The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.

Law enforcement then discovered multiple other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are illegal in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.

Police report initial examinations show the substance was probably blood from a person.

"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; authorities are currently not aware of any harm in association with the occurrence," they added.

Local authorities stated they were attempting "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the public for information.

An important representative commented the incident rendered him stunned and had to be resolved rapidly.

"This event affects the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist attack in 2020," he posted on online, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a gunman targeting people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
